SLIPPING INTO SUMMER IN THE FALL

Slip dress and militaru boots.

SF summer is here and it’s a hot one!! And while I’m not a big fan of temps that go up to into the 90s, I’m a big fan slip dresses. Thankfully we have had some days that went back to the mid 60s and it gave me an opportunity to introduce a pair of “newish”  boots that I cannot wait to rock for the rest of the fall and winter!

But a pair of military, lace-up boots like these are ideal to pair with a more dainty dress.  I got a little too much sun on my arms lately, so the long sleeve mesh tee serves as sun protection and also makes this dress a little bit easier to wear if going to work and not the beach.
Now my fave part of this look (although I always get a kick out of the poppy print of this dress, that’s a bit less expected then the ubiquitous leopard print), are the gorgeous, whimsical, “Hand Eye Heart” earrings! How surreal chic are these! Not to mention they add just a touch of color the to the monochromatic look.
I will be listing these 90s beauties soon, but you can email me, info@sashamaksvintage.com, with inquiries.
XO Sasha

IT’S SPRING: BRING ON THE LAYERS

How to layer for spring. It’s spring and I’m dreaming of gauzy vintage dresses paired with espadrilles, but instead I’m sporting layers (albeit lighter ones) and carrying a scarf and beanie in my tote just in case. That said I do enjoy the creative aspect of layering that warm weather doesn’t afford. It offers opportunities for unexpected pairings and takes full advantage of your wardrobe regardless of season.

Both the jacket and coat are of lightweight materials (alas the gangster sized shoulders on the polyester coat do not keep me warm) hence perfect for layering together. And the thin wool mock-t neck creates the ideal foundation.
Nothing spices up an outfit better then a shot of color, especially if that color is what I have termed “burnt sienna” and happens to belong to a vintage YSL jacket.

Since extra long sleeves of the coat will hide any arm candy, I kept the focus up top with multi -ring hoops that are currently my earrings of choice, the style lends a carefree vibe and goes with everything.I love how to the rose gold heeled booties echo the jacket and the woven diamond pattern of the  bucket bag adds texture.
XO Sasha

And there’s still time to book a Spring Makeover collab with Atelier Emmanuel (the promo ends April 30th), get all the deets here (and see them below the slide show) and feel free to email me at info@styledbysashamaks with any questions.

IF YOU LOVE TO LAYER

Moto jacket and poncho.

Can we layer? Isn’t it what #winterstyle is all about? When the cold is especially biting I rely on a puffer jacket to keep warm, but I sometimes find they are too hot to wear. And I actually prefer to layer then rely on one piece. And here I really piled it on!

And I love how this kind of styling offers so many possibilities to create a one-off look. First the mock a-line sweater is paired with a thrifted Ralph Lauren shirt, over that goes my oversized moto and to battle the high winds a vintage 80s poncho shawl from Turkey. I find the interplay of different fabrics really interesting.

Needless to say, statement jewelry is a must to stand-up to this busy look visually. The wide silver-tone collar has a tribal vibe and I like how it contrasts in style with the edgy moto, but meshes seamlessly with the southwest style poncho. And how cool is the contrast of small scale plaid with the blown out design of the scarf! The semi-matte crinkled  earrings offer a cool contrast to the high polished necklace.

The mid-calf boot are by a local designer, Martha Davis, bought ages ago. The distressed texture is so appealing, I like something with a lived-in look in the mix with more polished pieces.

Sasha

{ELEVATED STAPLES} MILITARY CHIC + PATCH DENIM

0-4
Which pieces do you reach for everyday to make dressing in the morning seamless? For me they include staples like a military inspired jacket, a pencil denim skirt, and a metallic cardigan. All three can be paired with just about any other piece in my wardrobe and are easily dressed up or down.

But the jacket and the skirt are hardly run-of-the-mill. A simple denim pencil skirt (love its playful 70s vibe) gets transformed in an abstract collage design. A generously cut wool jacket sports strappy details across the back (the metallic cardi plays off the masculine shape nicely). These unbasic wardrobe essentials deserve an equally elevated shoe. Rose gold cut out heels earn extra style points.

The military green and denim look calls for some bold bling. Throw in chunky round link bracelets in the mix and mismatched ear candy, (a gold-tone modernist chandelier contrasts with a sculptural wood earring). The more mismatched the rings the better, one way to make it work is to create a common thread with similar shapes and metals.

Which elevated staples do you rely on everyday?

THE COOL CARDIGAN

Statement cardigan and sheer tunic.
When you’re not in the mood for a structured blazer, there’s nothing more cozier then a cardigan, but it doesn’t have to be boring! On a recent visit to the Fashion Incubator (FiSF) I met an emerging local designer, Mahsa Gharehgozloo. whose collection, Wear Mahsa, is sophisticated, elegant and ideal for work and after-hours.
One of the pieces that really stood out to me was the longline cardi with an abstract print on the back. It’s bold and versatile, and could be easily layered over another sweater or jacket. To contrast the bulky knit, I chose a sheer tunic dress ( actually an overlay from a dress you’ll see in another post). Tuxedo stripe trousers and chunky sandals balance the look between laid-back and polished. Chunky Lucite jewelry compliments the casual chic look.
How would style a statement cardigan?

P.S. You can shop Wear Mahsa and another local talent I have featured on the blog, Kajan Cake, Friday, May 5th, 6.30-8.30pm at FiSF’s Pop Up, 50 Powell Street, San Francisco, CA 94102.

Originally it was below the knee and since it’s already so covered up, I had it shortened for a more updated look. Pairing it here with faux leather leggings, for one my fave trends that’s circled back around, dress-over-pants. Emma Watson showed us how to rock this look on the red carpet at the Golden Globes.
And was a popular look on the runway, seen at Pre-Fall 2014 Elizabeth and James, J.Brand, and McQ Alexaner McQueen.

Styled by Sasha Maks: Leopard Print Blouse + Pencil Skirt

Maria has a been a long time jewelry client of mine and has since become a dear friend. We met at a vintage boutique in San Francisco where I consigned jewelry. We bonded over our love for vintage clothes and all things fashion. Maria has an amazing collection of evening gowns and cocktail dresses from the 50s and 60s that are ideal for her petite frame and are perfect for the opening night at the ballet she attends every year. When I started styling, Maria was one of my first clients, and her enthusiasm for fashion and sophisticated taste has made our sessions extremely fun and creative.Leopard print blouse pencil skirt

For this look, Maria asked me to style her for a cocktail party from items in her closet. She wanted something sexy but not too dressy. The look was built around a leopard print pussy bow blouse she had recently purchased and was not sure how to wear.  The rust brown color of the blouse flattered Maria’s fair complexion and strawberry blond tresses. The classic animal print and pussy bow inspired me to give her look a retro twist. A touch of Lauren Bacall and drop of Veronica Lake–sultry, glam, and polished. She had also recently acquired a black pencil skirt with a revealing mid-thigh slit.Leopard print blouse pencil skirtPairing a bow tie blouse with a pencil skirt may seem obvious, but both of these pieces had so much personality! Maria does not shy away from transparency and since this was an evening look we decided not to cover up the sheerness of the fabric, and she has the legs to carry off the sexy side slit. To temper the skirt’s sex appeal, I chose tall rust colored suede boots and light gray hose with ribbing to add subtle coverage.Leopard print blouse pencil- sasha maks vintage vintage braceletsFor jewelry, I selected a slinky snake motif bangle with rich enamel detailing layered with a gold tone, mixed texture, plaited link bracelet. A high dome green cocktail ring in faux jade picked up the colors in the snake bracelet and the horseshoe drop earrings. I had just seen the Golden Globes, and loved Cate Blanchett’s faux bob! We decided to give it a try. I think the sleek, controlled style suited this look to a T, and a pink red pout added a glam finishing touch.
Maria looks provocatively chic in this classic but naughty ensemble. She was thrilled with the results!Leopard print blouse pencil skirt Styled by Sasha MaksTo book a  personal styling session, contact info@styledbysashamaks.com.
