JUST A BLAZER AND JEANS

Camel blazer and jeans.

Happy New Year everyone! Hope everyone celebrated in their ideal fashion. I unfortunately was under the weather, but not as a bad as last year when I struggled to get over  a cold for a month. But Russian New Year is still ahead (January 14th) and I will make up for it then!

I have many exciting things in store for the new year. Hence you may not here from as often for a little while. One of them involves a home improvement project that will be challenging  for someone who spends a lot of time working from home. The other big project (that has hit a few snags) will be setting up a new website and blog. It will be hard, but so worth it and I’m dreading it and feeling excited about all the changes to come!

I wanted to start the first post of 2019 with a very classic, very simple and oh so necessary outfit to have at your fingertips when life is too demanding to think up elaborate outfits. The formula is simple: blazer + t-neck sweater + loafers. Invest in the best pieces you can afford, they will last longer and you really need the classics to mix in with more quirky pieces you may want to experiment with.
My big splurge from last year was a pair of  Gucci Brixton loafers, they are classic through an through and will be impervious to passing trends. Ideally, I’d have topped of this look with a perfectly luxe but comfortable-as-a-bathrobe camel coat, and while that search continues, I did find this classic Rag & Bone double breasted blazer (that I sized up in to be able to wear with chunkier pieces underneath).
No surprise, think the secret in giving this type of look (and for that matter any other look) your own spin is the accessories. In my case that role will be probably always be fulfilled with over-the-top jewelry. These giant sterling and vermeil 80s hoops are from Israel, I’m pretty smitten with them and will be not letting them go! As well as the the chunky domed cuff with just a sprinkling if diamante is Kenneth Lane.

As you know dressing well is about more then clothes, it affords the pleasure of feeling confident and comfortable while exploring your sartorial fantasies.

BLAZER AND TEE

DSC_8706

I love a good blazer (as you may easily see from previous looks here, here and here), from new designers, to mostly vintage and thrifted, I’m always on the lookout for this wardrobe hero piece.

The reason is simple. The right blazer can immediately transform a casual look (my preferred mode of dressing, but let me qualify that by a phrase I heard/ready somewhere recently–considerate casual.

I love the ease of a graphic tee, this one references one of the best fashion movies from the late 60s, The Thomas Crown Affair (if you haven’t seen it I highly recommend it!). Pairing it was jeans makes for a cool casual look. But the addition of a blazer, just takes the whole chill ensemble to a new dimension. The blazer is very streamlined (no collar, no buttons, plain pockets),  and just makes it that much easier to pair with various looks. This teal color is great with denim, since the low contrast just makes the two pieces blend seamlessly.

But why stop with just a good blazer? You must have heard about the animal print trend? With leopard the clear front runner.
I have taken a long break from this classic print, and now just seem like just the right time to reintroduce it. And if you like me just want  a small dose of it for now, then there’s no better way to rock it then with an elegant pump.

And speaking of leopards, (I’m more then partial to animal jewelry, particularly big cats) and this creamy white enamel leopard head bracelet from the 80s just adds another subtle layer to the animal print theme. I’m also wearing a pair of Maltese Cross earring, another timeless motif, that will remain forever in style.

JUST JEANS AND A T-SHIRT

Courreges duster and vintage Levi's jeans.

The jeans and tee formula does not have to be basic, not if you consider each piece carefully. First, start with a vintage pair of denim. Ah, lived-in denim. Is there anything that compares? These vintage Levi’s set the stage for a look that’s all about comfort and confidence. Then add an interesting tee–a close fitting knit with a cut-out design balances the well-worn denim.

I topped of  this look with another vintage fave, a Courréges duster that you’ve probably noticed me sporting before, (here and here) if you’ve spent any time on this blog.  It’s my go-to cover-up when I want something neutral, but with an inherent dose of cool.

The jewelry is understated, but not boring. I love Lucite not only for its ability to go with everything, but its Modernist vibe. It always looks fresh and playful!  Just like these ball drop earrings with gold detailing.

IT’S SPRING: BRING ON THE LAYERS

How to layer for spring. It’s spring and I’m dreaming of gauzy vintage dresses paired with espadrilles, but instead I’m sporting layers (albeit lighter ones) and carrying a scarf and beanie in my tote just in case. That said I do enjoy the creative aspect of layering that warm weather doesn’t afford. It offers opportunities for unexpected pairings and takes full advantage of your wardrobe regardless of season.

Both the jacket and coat are of lightweight materials (alas the gangster sized shoulders on the polyester coat do not keep me warm) hence perfect for layering together. And the thin wool mock-t neck creates the ideal foundation.
Nothing spices up an outfit better then a shot of color, especially if that color is what I have termed “burnt sienna” and happens to belong to a vintage YSL jacket.

Since extra long sleeves of the coat will hide any arm candy, I kept the focus up top with multi -ring hoops that are currently my earrings of choice, the style lends a carefree vibe and goes with everything.I love how to the rose gold heeled booties echo the jacket and the woven diamond pattern of the  bucket bag adds texture.

HOODIE AND SEQUINS

Hoodie and dress-over-jeans

I must admit, I’m not naturally predisposed to wearing hoodies (or most things athletic related), but I’m quickly warming up to the idea, and if wearing one can include a vintage lace and sequin dress then I’m all in! And layering this sporty/luxe ensemble over a pair of jeans is one of my most beloved styling tricks (see here, here, and here). What’s cool about the dress-over-pants styling is the excuse to dress up during the day (if utilizing a cocktail dress), no need for an invitation to a fancy event. It’s the best of both worlds!

Heels would not look out place here, but a pair of Chelsea boots with rose-gold heels is more practical for running around all day. As far as coat, a sober double breasted number with exaggerated shoulders and extra long sleeves adds a masculine/avant-garde touch.

The white coin earrings, as far as I’m concerned, go with everything. I need big jewelry to stand up to this oversized coat, cue large Lucite bangles dusted with Swarovki crystals and an event bigger pavé snake ring.

The bucket bag in leather and a woven cotton design is another amazing find from my trip to Mexico City in October (yes it was a fruitful trip regarding many things including bags–I came back with three, not counting the two straw bags). It’s superbly made and was reasonably priced, I think around $150. They don’t have another one on their website, but there’s a very chic clutch in the same fabric.

DIOR AND FLARES

Dior jacket and flares.
I hope everyone had a wonderful time ringing in  the New Year! Thank you so much for all your support, without it a small business like mine would not succeed.

This look was inspired by all of my fav things. The vintage Dior jacket was purchased many years ago (and had a matching skirt that I passed on!) It’s so warm that I rarely get a chance to wear it. The high-waist flared jeans are from H&M from a few years back, I need to wear them more often, they are too cool to ignore!

Lately I have been obsessed with bodysuits. specifically lace and mesh ones, and I’m on the hunt to find more. I think they are ideal for layering when it’s cold out. They offer an opportunity for a glimpse of something seductive under all the covered up winter looks. This  classic cashmere cardi is the perf  way to underscore the more revealing layer underneath.

For the jewelry I added two distinct necklace, the chunky chain is by Givenchy, it comes with a rhinestone pendant that can be easily removed. The tusk pendant has a boho vibe to compliment the 70s style flares.

And finally for the shoes. I’m mad for these rose-gold flatforms! And don’t want to give them up during the winter, not to mention I get tired of constantly wearing boots. A pair of glittery socks  make for a fun and quirky combo.

Happy New Year!

SHEER BLACK AND VINTAGE DENIM

Sheer black dress over vintage jeans.
How to elevate a vintage pair of rugged jeans? Just throw on a sheer maxi dress and wear it as a duster. I love to see these two opposing textures of the denim and chiffon mingle! And this is such an easy look to put together, and it combines my favorite formula for an outfit–comfort mixed with glam.

A sheer dress like this has endless possibilities. My favorite way to style is to incorporate is as a layer. I have worn it as a shirt under a maxi taffeta tulip skirt, and again as a duster over a short slip dress.  And a sheer dress like this serves another important purpose, you can wear something more provocative underneath and feel less exposed with a sheer layer on top.

To complete this look, I accessorized with a very Chanel-esque pair of double drop earrings, and a slouchy, statement satchel in a delicious raspberry hue. A pair of  star print high-tops are a logical choice to lend a cool edge.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2016 STYLE RECAP

Sasha Maks Vintage 2016 Recap

Happy New Year!!! I hope everyone enjoyed the Holidays and ringing in the New Year!
First of all I would like to thank you for letting me share these weekly posts with you! My fave part at the end of the year is to look back at the evolution of my personal style, the collabs, and the best buys of the year.

Vintage shopping never fails me and remains my best strategy for sourcing outerwear and cocktail/party dresses. And I have started taking my clients shopping for vintage clothes as well, the trick is to be open to what you find even if it’s not on the shopping agenda. Some of my best finds was a ’70s bronze lamé grecian midi dress from Gump’s (that I can wear to a NYE party and pair with basic sweater to sport as a skirt), a Courrèges duster (I cannot think of more versatile piece for spring and summer!), and a raw silk maxi dress in pale yellow from the ’80s.
Besides vintage, I’m also partial to designer consignment boutiques. And while there are many to choose from, my go-to is Closet 1951. I’m sure to find must-have designer hand bags and closet staples at a fraction of the price.

If you have been following my blog since 2015, you will remember my collaborations with local designers Kajan Cake,  Tokyo Gamine, and WearMahsa. It was pleasure to feature them again on the blog, here, here, and here. Each designer has a distinct personal vision, a dedication to craftsmanship, and the commitment to sourcing the best quality fabrics.
My shoe wardrobe got a much needed boost. As you know I turn to Zara first for a quick fix for on-trend and affordable shoes, the mule loafers and ballet slippers with ribbon ties where my best finds. Once the weather got chillier, I was lucky to score some fierce chunky Rag and Bone booties and Alexander Wang cutout heel  booties.
And I was very fortunate to score an oversized Vetements coat (that has proven to be incredibly wearable) and the coveted reworked jeans, that due to  a fuller cut on the leg, really function as trousers.

So what are my conclusions for the 2016 style recap? My basic tenets for dressing well remain the same, but with a  twist. I will still keep the foundation of my wardrobe stocked with closet staples such as a trench coat, moto jacket (I’m saving up for the perfect one!), classic coat, jeans, but will look for iterations that are more fashion forward (a strong shoulder, a creative hem). And I’ll keep an eye out for more unique vintage finds in both clothes and jewelry that define my signature style.
Shop my fave picks below and please share your personal style goals with me in the comments.

VINTAGE DENIM | LEVI’S LOVE

0-9

A roomy pair of vintage, perfectly distressed Levi’s and a sheer gauzy top finished off with a grosgrain ribbon banded straw fedora make for the perfect off-duty look for a late August day in SF. I love  all the amazing jean options available right now! You can hunt for the originals at vintage boutiques, thrift stores, and fleas. And if finding the ideal fit in vintage denim is challenging, companies like RE/DONE offer reworked denim with a modern fit.  Another option, is Urban Outfitters’ Urban Renewal collection with redesigned denim by Levi’s, Wrangler, and Guess.
I complimented the relaxed look with  single earring and a mix of bracelets, the Kenneth Lane enamel Giraffe bangle is fave!
Which denim styles are peaking your interest for fall?

VETEMENTS BLUES: THE STATEMENT JEAN

Vetements jeans
Luckily, I did not have to blow a month’s paycheck to purchase Vetements denim. While traveling in LA, I happened upon a crazy sale and had to snap up this cool reworked pair of jeans by a French-based  designer collective (who’ve earned a cult following since their launch in Fall 2014), whose head designer, Demna Gvasalia, has been appointed the creative director of Balenciaga in 2015.

How to style these collaged jeans? I chose unfussy pieces, like the Cos sweater with sculptural sleeves, casual chic loafer mules, a vintage monogrammed crossbody, and a killer architectural necklace by Lanvin.

If you’re in the mood to experiment with unconventional denim you’ll be spoiled for choices (without spending a good chunk of your rent) from brands like Topshop (does this step hem look familiar?), H&M (the paneling on these jeans creates beautiful shading),  Zara (love the distinctive tuxedo style stripes on this wide leg pair, and the pretty embroidery on this cropped pair).

What kind of unique jeans are your rocking this summer?
