TRENCH + FLORAL MAXI DRESS

Trench coat and maxi floral dress.

I think many of us are always looking for ways to achieve an effortlessly cool look that can be put together without second thought When the temps drops, I tend to reach for the hard to beat jeans + sweater combo, but this outfit is just as easy and casual, but appears like it required a bit more effort. And I always like to utilize pieces from different seasons. Not only does it create opportunities for unexpected juxtapositions, but I got more bang for my  buck from my wardrobe.

Is there anything more comfortable then a generously cut maxi dress? This 80s floral number is from India, and I’m always awed by the yards and yards of fabric in the skirt! There’s so much girlish charm in the flow of a full skirted, finely pleated handkerchief skirt! And I’m especially drawn to dark florals, I think they are easier to transition into fall and beyond, and look less saccharin than the brightly colored variety.

To introduce a bit of edge, I need to temper all this sweet floral delicate frivolity with something a bit tough and masculine. That’s where my cold weather perennial fave comes in—a wool trench coat. It’s a wardrobe staple and pretty much goes with everything.  And, I’m happy to see the knee boot come back with a vengeance. It feels like it’s been awhile! I’ve picked this quilted pair recently at a consignment store, and love their practicality and cool factor.

The safety pin drop earrings are Dior and they expertly embody a tough femininity. There’s something  special about shoulder duster earrings, they move with your ever step. Among the amber drops there’s a gold branded “D” charm hidden away, such a cool way to add the designer’s signature!

Among a couple of my favorite ring, I added a couple of jade bands to  pick up the olive hue of the trench. I like when pieces echo and reinforce and play off each other in a look. Like the play of the diamond weave of the bucket bag and the dainty florals of the dress.

SMOCKED MAXI DRESS AND SHEER TOP

fullsizeoutput_b629

We’ve had quite the heatwave last week! I’m talking 90 degree weather in San Francisco!!! But most of the time we always need a layer in SF’s notoriously cold summers. A strapless maxi dress is perfect for adding some kind of layer underneath that won’t leave you freezing in the shade and wind.

This 70s maxi dress features a smocked bodice (the fabric is gathered and stretchable) that will flatter various body types, and I love the vibe of a dreamy, romantic summer that it conjures up for me.  But this dress is easy to style all year round, I want that cost per wear maximized! I can layer a tissue thin t-neck underneath in the fall, and style it as a skirt with a chunky sweater in the winter.

The sheer knit tee is a perfect under layer for the tight bodice, no fear of unattractive bulk here! The minimalist tee inspired me to wear a utilitarian Prada crossbody to offset the statement boho print. A basket tote would be nice too, but a bit predictable.

These metallic strappy sandals deserve a mention. The embossed snakeskin is drop dead gorgeous, and that padded thick ankle strap makes the shoe. I was convinced, I would not be able to wear them, thin straps are immediately painful to me. But these Bottega Veneta’s are in a league of their own, the straps are pliable and are adjustable in three different places.

With the jewelry I did skew more boho to compliment the dress. The Monies wood and gold foil Lucite drop earrings glow from within, they are earthy, but in a very sophisticated way (get all the deets on them here). And I love how the gold  echoes the yellow in the daisies! And if you fall as hard for that between finger ring as I did,  you can shop it here.

FALL FOR A BOHO MAXI

Boho dress and camel jacket.

I love a good maxi boho dress! All that beautifully printed fabric and a voluminous silhouette convey a laid back, global vibe. So just because we’re in the midst of October, I’m not ready to give up on my boho dresses yet, especially when it involves an  extra billowy sleeve, empire waist Indian dress from the 80s!

And since SF’s  fall weather, right now, is veering from high 60s to high 70s there will be plenty of opportunities to rock this number. To make a summer dress  transition into fall top it off with a classic wool blazer or coat and tough chunky booties (love that this trend is not only going strong but the boots are getting chunkier and chunkier!).

I didn’t want to the obvious thing and style this look with an equally bohemian style earring. The Dior safety pin drop shoulder-dusters are edgy in a very subtle and the amber drops are the just right touch of earthy.

SUNNY MAXI AND STATEMENT SLEEVES

8572 It’s September but, I’m not willing to give up easy summer dresses, especially this vintage raw silk number in pale yellow just yet! And since San Francisco summers really start this time of year and go through October, I’ll  still be able to rock my fave summer dresses for at least a month. But, I did want to acknowledge that fall is coming and paired this dress with chunky booties with a military vibe. I love the combination of a feminine piece with something more edgy and tough. And speaking of juxtapositions. The black jacket is super casual, but has an incredible statement sleeve!  The balloon sleeve really elevates this sporty piece. I’m wearing one of my fave necklaces (email info@sashamakvintage.com with inquiries), not only is it easy to style due to the mixed metals and textured finish, but the celestial motif is just versatile enough to pair with just about anything. SLIPPING INTO FALL

Version 2

The slip dress is a constant in my wardrobe, I find it to be effortless, feminine, and never out of favor with the trends. And depending on fit and style it can skew sexy or sporty. This piece is a vintage slip, and look how modest it is! So it’s perfect for styling as a dress. The scalloping is a sweet touch, and of course my instinct is to always introduce an opposing element to keep things from looking predictable. Hence the choice of shoes is a chunky, bootie with a thick tread sole and tough zipper in the front.

I love a heavy cozy knit to ward of the unforgiving San Francisco winds! This longline forest green cardi is from local brand Wear Mahsa. Her knits are superb! I like the contrast between the slinky dress and the chunky sweater.

Let’s talk about the jewelry. I have been paying more attention to sterling lately. And have purchased some fantastic oversized 80s earrings from Israel. I’ve been rocking these long chunky “hammock” hoops with everything! With something this impactful you don’t need a lot of other jewelry. I just added another new find, a Southwestern butterfly ring inlaid with semiprecious stones. Love the playful motif, (and in Native American symbology butterflies are a symbol of piece and transformation), and that it takes up so much real estate on my hand (it’s like three rings in one!).

LATE SUMMER FLORALS

Floral maxi dress and moto jacket.

There are a few things I adore about this vintage maxi dress! All that fabric, just blows me away!! If I bought this dress new, the cost would be relatively hefty just based on the amount of fabric used here! And the black and cream flower print is seasonless. The shoulder pads would make a football player proud, They are massive and they are fabulous, and really whittle away the waist visually. Given the very 90s grunge floral print this dress really straddles the late 80s and early 90s. And as the icing on the cake, the label reads “American Angel”.

The oversized moto is perfect for infamous SF winds (are summers are notoriously chilly) and to temper all those yards of floral print.
I just added to a pair of black and white sun and moon earrings to soften the hard edge vibe of the biker jacket and cut-out heel Chelsea booties. The lunch box clutch is such a sartorial chameleon, I have yet to find a look it doesn’t go with!

THE {STATEMENT} SUMMER MAXI

fullsizeoutput_96c2

To say that have been jonesing for gauzy, flowy summer dresses would be an understatement! And luckily I was able to pick up several at a couple of my fave vintage stores in the Haight like Relic and Static.  The only downside is  San Francisco’s faux summer. It’s not only in the low 60s, but the winds are unforgiving. But I’m undeterred! The solution when living in SF and the Bay Area is to layer.
The forest green longline cardigan is from Wear Mahsa, it’s chic and weighty and the perfect topper for my 70s smocked maxi dress. The first thing that drew me to the dress was the fantastic sunflower print! And of course the smocked bodice is another stand out feature. It really accentuates the torso and creates a cool optical effect with the oversized print.

Gorgeous earrings are guaranteed to elevate a casual summer maxi dress. I love the swirl pattern design it meshes perfectly with the floral print! You can shop these beauties online, and one of the best things about them they are practically weightless.
I’m also wearing a couple of new rings, a large stone ring  from Israel and a scarab (a beetle that’s a good luck symbol) faience ring most likely from Egypt. These are definitely staying in my personal collection!

This cool “lunch bag” is by French designer Marie Turnor, from Big Lives, that I won in an IG contest!!  The leather is so supple and I can see myself wearing it with everything.  And these rose gold flatforms from Zara, are still one of my best shoe buys. Who can resist the and sporty mash up?

SHEER BLACK AND VINTAGE DENIM

Sheer black dress over vintage jeans.
How to elevate a vintage pair of rugged jeans? Just throw on a sheer maxi dress and wear it as a duster. I love to see these two opposing textures of the denim and chiffon mingle! And this is such an easy look to put together, and it combines my favorite formula for an outfit–comfort mixed with glam.

A sheer dress like this has endless possibilities. My favorite way to style is to incorporate is as a layer. I have worn it as a shirt under a maxi taffeta tulip skirt, and again as a duster over a short slip dress.  And a sheer dress like this serves another important purpose, you can wear something more provocative underneath and feel less exposed with a sheer layer on top.

To complete this look, I accessorized with a very Chanel-esque pair of double drop earrings, and a slouchy, statement satchel in a delicious raspberry hue. A pair of  star print high-tops are a logical choice to lend a cool edge.

RETRO SUMMER: MAXI AND HOODED JACKET

Maxi dress and fishnet socks
I found the perfect topper for one of my fave vintage dresses from the 80s, in the back of my closet. I don’t wear this cropped hooded jacket much (not sure why, it’s so sweet and has a lining that matches the print!), but it’s an ideal piece  for the maxi dress to create a tonal look.

The platform metallic sandals are a recent find from Zara (I bought them for this dress that I wore for a wine country day trip on my birthday in May). The rose gold straps drew me immediately, how cool is the construction of the wood veneer heel (shades of mid-century modern design) punctuated with a track heel! I wanted to style  these sandals with socks, and these beige fishnets compliment the color perfectly and the net design plays off the striations of the wood patterns.

I chose some bold jewelry in Lucite to compliment this look. The shoulder duster drop earrings from the 80s are inset with glass stones (shoot me an email if you’re interested in these), and the wraparound faceted bead bracelet (no longer available) adds a fun pop of color.

VINTAGE SUMMER: DRESS AND DUSTER

Vintage Courreges duster and floral midi dress.

I think this outfit is going to be in heavy rotation this summer. And what I love most about it is that besides the sneaks, all the pieces in this look are vintage. As you’ve probably noticed a great deal of my wardrobe is vintage, especially the outerwear. This is one the most easiest categories to shop in vintage. It’s amazing what you kind find for the fraction of the price!

The dress is from the 90s (picked up at Wallflower in the Mission) and the Courréges duster is from the the 60s, in the mix is jewelry from various periods including a family heirloom cameo ring (a former brooch). Although, I often buy new clothing as well, nothing is as satisfying as putting together a truly unique look from pieces from decades past. No chance of spotting most of these pieces on anyone else.

I love the large dark floral print on the sneakers! They really update the whole look and give the feminine outfit a fresh perspective. The midi length (I toyed with the idea of hemming it, but decided it’s perfect as is) of the dress calls for a heel, but that would be too obvious, and the flatform sole adds the needed height.

What is your go-to  summer uniform? Please let me know in the comments.
