HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2016 STYLE RECAP

Sasha Maks Vintage 2016 Recap

Happy New Year!!! I hope everyone enjoyed the Holidays and ringing in the New Year!
First of all I would like to thank you for letting me share these weekly posts with you! My fave part at the end of the year is to look back at the evolution of my personal style, the collabs, and the best buys of the year.

Vintage shopping never fails me and remains my best strategy for sourcing outerwear and cocktail/party dresses. And I have started taking my clients shopping for vintage clothes as well, the trick is to be open to what you find even if it’s not on the shopping agenda. Some of my best finds was a ’70s bronze lamé grecian midi dress from Gump’s (that I can wear to a NYE party and pair with basic sweater to sport as a skirt), a Courrèges duster (I cannot think of more versatile piece for spring and summer!), and a raw silk maxi dress in pale yellow from the ’80s.
Besides vintage, I’m also partial to designer consignment boutiques. And while there are many to choose from, my go-to is Closet 1951. I’m sure to find must-have designer hand bags and closet staples at a fraction of the price.

If you have been following my blog since 2015, you will remember my collaborations with local designers Kajan Cake,  Tokyo Gamine, and WearMahsa. It was pleasure to feature them again on the blog, here, here, and here. Each designer has a distinct personal vision, a dedication to craftsmanship, and the commitment to sourcing the best quality fabrics.
My shoe wardrobe got a much needed boost. As you know I turn to Zara first for a quick fix for on-trend and affordable shoes, the mule loafers and ballet slippers with ribbon ties where my best finds. Once the weather got chillier, I was lucky to score some fierce chunky Rag and Bone booties and Alexander Wang cutout heel  booties.
And I was very fortunate to score an oversized Vetements coat (that has proven to be incredibly wearable) and the coveted reworked jeans, that due to  a fuller cut on the leg, really function as trousers.

So what are my conclusions for the 2016 style recap? My basic tenets for dressing well remain the same, but with a  twist. I will still keep the foundation of my wardrobe stocked with closet staples such as a trench coat, moto jacket (I’m saving up for the perfect one!), classic coat, jeans, but will look for iterations that are more fashion forward (a strong shoulder, a creative hem). And I’ll keep an eye out for more unique vintage finds in both clothes and jewelry that define my signature style.
Shop my fave picks below and please share your personal style goals with me in the comments.
XO Sasha

SUEDE TRENCH-NOIR

Suede Rebecca Minkoff trench coat and Sasha Maks Vintage boho jewels.
I’m very excited to be hosting an event at the San Francisco Rebecca Minkoff  boutique next week! We hope you can join us for wine tasting, shopping & networking! Please RSVP to events@rebeccaminkoff. com.

On my recent visit to the store, I was immediately drawn to a deep burgundy trench in a buttery suede.
In the hierarchy of outerwear, the trench is at the top of my list. It’s classic wardrobe staple that pretty much goes with everything, and conjures up the allure of a mysterious film noir hero, not to mention Audrey Hepburn’s glam party girl chic turn in the iconic Burberry in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. While the tan or khaki coat will remain my go-to, one in a statement color can be irresistible!
Since a trench coat is such a blank canvas, I wanted to give it boho twist by pairing it with a saddle bag and babouches, and a generous sprinkle of antiqued gold and brass jewelry.

How do you like to style your timeless trench?

HAIR TUTORIAL: THE BUN UNDONE

Updo tutorial

I love fantasizing about styling my hair in new ways. And I have the Pinterest board to prove it!  I’m constantly inspired what’s coming down the runways. The fall catwalks did not dissappoint, I was especially taken by the artfully disheveled, but chic updos at Victoria Beckham and Diane von Furstenberg, (Oralando Pita at DVF called his version the seductress bun. Yes, please!)

But recreating these looks myself has proven to be a bit of a challenge. The results are mixed, and the style usually doesn’t last for more then a couple of hours. So, I often get it done professionally, which requires making appointments and obviously can get a bit pricy. To help take my  expertise up a notch, I enlisted the help of a Bay Area hairstylist, Victoria Johnson, who loves to experiment and is up on the latest tricks and styles of the trade.

My hair was washed the day before. In the morning I applied Ziesche Modern Apothecary Dry Shampoo, a current made in SF fave, when my oily scalp is really out on control, I like to use an old standby Pssst! Instant Dry Shampoo.
I’m obsessed with dry shampoo! I don’t want to wash my hair every day and this brilliant powder extends the life of a blowout at least a  couple of extra days. It’s also a great styling product for adding some grip to newly washed hair when doing any kind of updo or braid.

Updo tutorial

1. Add some mousse to your hair, you can do this with dry or wet hair. You’ll just need a golf ball size (Don’t add more than that to avoid sticky hair). Work it throw from roots to ends. Then blow dry using any round brush you have. You want your hair to be nice and smooth when you start any up do. Victoria used Rene Furterer Vegetal Mousse and also recommends L’Oreal Curve It Mousse.

Updo tutorial

2. Blow out your hair. And back comb the crown for height (optional). Personally I love teasing the crown, I think the volume always flatters and adds that Bardo sex appeal.

Updo tutorial

3. Put your hair in a ponytail, rap the elastic around hair twice.

Updo tutorial

4. On the third time don’t put your hair all the way through and create a loop. Let some hair fall out of the loop.

Updo tutorial

5. Now start bobby pinning the loop to your head until it feels secure.

Updo tutorial

6. Backcomb and texture spray the hair that’s sticking out. This will give it a deliberately messy look. Victoria used Shu Uemura Texture Wave Dry Finishing Spray, and she also loves L’Oreal Fresh Dust Dry Shampoo Texture Expert.

Updo tutorial

This  pony/bun  hybrid is easy to do, and has just the right mix of nonchalance and polish. My biggest insight from doing this hair tutorial is the necessary prep work hair requires regardless of how udone the finished look is. Which hairstyles do you want to try for fall? Please comment below. And stay tuned for more easy chic tutorials.
xx Sasha
