HOUNDSTOOTH AND SLINKY MAXI

Houndstooth blazer and slinky maxi dress.

I think the most interesting looks possess a tension within them. So, I like to pair pieces that are the opposite of each other. Like this oversized blazer and maxi slip dress. This fall, traditional men’s fabrics like glen plaids and herringbone have come to the forefront. My most admired  from this genre of timeless fabrics is– houndstooth–the abstract broken checks of Scottish origin that where originally worn by shepherds, and later popularized by the British, specifically Edward the VII, Duke of Windsor, in the 30s and 40s, and later by Christian Dior, who often dabbled in it the 50s.

The sexy slip dress is toned down by the boxy cut of the blazer. And at the same time the exaggerated masculine shoulders only emphasize the slinky femininity of the dress. I would have ideally worn a slip skirt (still looking for the perfect one, and love that it’s a big trend!) that I’d have paired with a chunky loose knit sweater.

And what about the jewelry? I think the lock pendant necklace on a flat snake  chain (is there a better one?), is perfectly polished and nonchalant with this look.

And I’m happy the craze for animal print has reminded me to break out my cheetah print oxfords after a long hiatus. They are pretty practical and serve plenty of catty style (could not resist!).
